Days, months, and years down the road : What can we do when things get hard?
Alongside questions about how to get started with adoption, I have desperate parents - friends and strangers - asking, "We are struggling... what should we try?"
I am not an expert - I am a mom of three (soon to be four!) internationally adopted children. But, sometimes it is extremely helpful to talk through your situation with someone on the outside who is informed in attachment, trauma, grief, and other common struggles that children and their parents face. With three adopted kiddos in our house - we've seen a number of issues, many that we are still working through. These include, but are not limited to:
- Sleep Struggles
- Food Anxiety
- Sibling Rivalry
- Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
- Oppositional Defiance Disorder
- Sensory Processing Disorder
- Speech and Developmental Delays
- Disorganized Attachment
- Social Anxiety
- Attachment Struggles of Child
- Attachment Struggles of Parent
- Post Adoption Depression (Mother)
We have gone to therapy and seen counselors for help and advice in many of these areas. I have done over 50 hours of training on trauma, attachment, and grief in adoption.
If you are finding yourself needing a listening ear, an outside perspective, advice or help with brainstorming on how to best move forward, let's chat. Adoption is so hard. No one should have to do it alone.
